Cinderella 2025

Pantomime, a uniquely British theatrical tradition, has deep roots in the holiday season, and “Cinderella” is one of its most beloved productions.

The story of Cinderella, the mistreated stepdaughter who finds love and fortune, was introduced to pantomime around the early 1800s. The first recorded pantomime version of “Cinderella” was in 1804, staged at Drury Lane Theatre in London. It quickly gained popularity for its enchanting blend of humour, romance, and spectacle.

The Pantomime “Cinderella” includes traditional elements like the transformation scene, the glass slipper, and audience participation—often with a twist of cross-dressing, where the Fairy Godmother or the Ugly Stepsisters are played by men in exaggerated costumes. This playful gender-bending, combined with topical jokes and slapstick comedy, adds to the performance’s charm and hilarity.

Today, “Cinderella” remains a staple in pantomime seasons across the UK, bringing joy and laughter to audiences of all ages during the festive period. The tradition continues to adapt and reflect contemporary culture while preserving its magical essence.
