Aladdin 2007

Aladdin is the most popular of all the traditional pantomimes. It is a production of “Aladdin, or the Wonderful Scamp” at the Strand Theatre, London in 1861 from which the present-day version is descended.
This production christened Aladdin’s mother ‘Twankay’ after a variety of course leaf sold at the time for making green leaf-tea, while the Vizier’s son, a role which has subsequently been lost, was Pekoe, named after a more refined type of leaf.
It was not until a production at Drury Lane in 1885 that Widow Twankey, who was running a newspaper shop was sent the Emperor’s washing to launder. In 1889 the character of Wishee Washee first appeared, originally being played by one of the greatest pantomime performers, Dan Leno.
