Robinson Crusoe & the Caribbean Pirates 2010

Robinson Crusoe is unusual in that, with the possible exception of Dick Whittington, it is the only pantomime which is based on a true story.

It was first performed as a pantomime at the Drury Lane theatre in 1781.

Why does the Principal Boy slap her thigh? — well, it goes back to the prudish Victorian era, when the only way that a man could look at a woman’s legs was on stage when they were playing the parts of men and by wearing tights and with that particular slap the actress was drawing attention to her shapely thighs.

Pantomime is unique in that it is the only performing art form where the audience is not quietly looking in on what is happening, but is drawn into the story and encouraged to take part. As George Bernard Shaw once said “a child who has never seen a pantomime is a public danger”
