Mother Goose 2012
It is unusual to be able to pinpoint an exact date when a pantomime story first saw the light of day, as most pantomimes have evolved over centuries. However, the story of “Mother Goose” was created as a vehicle for one particular performer, the most popular performer of his day back in 1902, Dan Leno.
Dan Leno first appeared in pantomime at Drury Lane in 1887, and is generally recognised as the performer who created the character and look of the Pantomime Dame as we know her today.
What makes the role of Dame in “Mother Goose” different to all the other Dame roles is that, in this pantomime, the Dame is the leading role, in fact, the Dame IS the story. The plot is a very moral one and all hangs on the maxim of, in modern terms, “the way to have what you want is to want what you have”.
